This eliminates interference from signals up or down the dial from the signal you are interested in.So if you have a fading signal on 6 mHz, and a heterodyne squeal or splatter from a strong signal on 6.005 mHz, you turn on the sync and choose the lower sideband. The signal still fades (slow AGC settings helps this), but it remains legible during the fade.Selectable sideband sync goes one step further by allowing you to choose either the upper or the lower sideband of the signal you are receiving. Its a fairly easy repair however a complete 180 alignment isnt done with Heathkit, Eico or other entry level test equipment. The 180 also has current and future service issues with the so called silver mica disease in the IF cans. There are several Internet sites for that series.Another plus is that Drake is still servicing those radios.The HQ-180/180A is considered as the best of the 2 dial radios (seperate general coverage and amateur bandspread dials) with the possible exception of the sometimes cranky as well as expensive National NC-400. If you like to twiddle knobs and constantly adjust things, you can still do that by turning the sync off.There are a few differences between the R8 and 8A with the biggest one being that the R8 does not have synchronous detection. The elimination of distortion during fade out/in is something that can't by done by any other means.If you just want to listen, the selectable sideband sync is a miracle.
The 180A, if left plugged-in, will operate the 6BE6/6C4 filaments 24/7 and can add “thousands†of hours of operation. The “silver mica disease†problems aside, these can be a “bear†to repair and align if you haven’t repaired or aligned a tube-type triple-conversion rcvrs in awhile. Having recently repaired a 180 and 180A and having used the 180A on-the-air and for casual SWL, I would recommend steering clear of either. I use a Kenwood TS-940 for hamming and also some SWLing they are in that price range above on Ebay regularly.I’d like to echo some of Carl’s comments regarding the 180. It was unreliable.If you intend to spend in the $600-1000 range there are many 90's era ham transceivers that have excellent general coverage receivers that cover roughly 100kHz to 30 mHz.
Even with this equip, and following the alignment procedure, the 60 KHz passband is less than ideal. I use a vintage HP 606B Sig Gen + HP 5314A Counter for alignment. In terms of alignment, Carl is right on. A “flat†6C4 will cause some very subtle problems, mostly on the upper bands, and should be just routinely replaced.
